Week notes 4–6th January
It’s 5.36 pm on a Friday, on the first working week back of the year so I’m going to keep this short and sweet and only share three things to mark the fact I’ve only worked three days this week.
This week we officially kicked off a new client engagement so it’s been all hands to the deck to get that successfully kicked off. Considering it’s only been a matter of weeks, I feel like I’ve covered a lot on my onboarding checklist which feels good and I’ve finally got an HDMI>USB C adapter that reliably works which was causing me a headache.
In other news
- I had a great conversation with Rachael Shah, a friend, and peer working in a Head of Delivery role at Vypr we discussed different approaches we’ve been taking to design a delivery framework. She left me with some good ideas to take forward and some excellent reading and concepts to explore namely the concept of decision stacks which I’ll definitely be doing some further reading around
2. I really enjoyed reading Sarah Mace’s (Head of Experience Design
@leeds_2023) medium article https://sarah-mace.medium.com/all-i-want-for-2023-is-to-be-more-agile-13eca2fbcefb point 4 particularly resonated with me
We may need some Agile (capital A) frameworks in some areas of our organisations. Perhaps if we’re shipping features and fixing tickets across products and services. But more broadly across the organisation, we might need a softer approach. We need agility.
3. I’ve still been favoriting a lot of Tom Kerwin’s tweets lately and particularly liked this quote from Scott Berkun. It ties into my point about understanding the ask in a previous week's note. It’s prompted me to be critical about ensuring I’m solving the right problem before jumping in.
I hope you’ve all had good weeks. I feel like I’ve had a productive week but I’m glad it’s short as my head is spinning a bit. I’ve spoken to a lot of friends in the last week and it’s been notable how many people are suffering a dose of the January blues and feeling overwhelmed which I’ve definitely felt at points too, so let’s congratulate ourselves for making it through week 1 of 2023. Onwards! 🥳
